The Foundation of Tagudin
The Augustine chapter of January 5, 1586 accepted the convent of Tagudin as a house of the order. San Augustin adds that it had San Christobal de Bangar for a visita and that no prior was named until the next chapter. Father Juan de Hererra was named prior in the chapter of April 15, 1587. Jorde states erroneously that the first minister was Father Matias Manrique who was appointed in 1591.In 1590, the convent was asked to contribute an annual rent of 14 pesos to San Augustine Monastery. The catalog of 1591 does not make mentioned of Tagudin, the Estado of 1612, however, indicates that Tagudin had one convent with two priests attending to 1,000 tributos or 3,000 souls. In 1639, the prior of Tagudin donated two bells weighing seven arrobas and seven libras (80 kg. 220 gm) for the campaign of Governor Sebastian Hortado de Corcuera against the Dutch who were threatening to invade.
